i use a lot of different trackers but renoise in particular has made my life a lot easier as i have made a huge library of chopped breaks that i can load into any song im working on. obviously you can listen deeply on any platform you are making music on but i think trackers make it a bit easier as you are essentially using a more complex step sequencer. its easy to get lost in that where you are just chopping the same part of breaks over and over and seeing that it looks right on the timeline and sounds well enough, like ok ill move on to the next thing. when i was using ableton my focus was on getting things done quickly and i developed a lot of routines with chopping breaks. i used ableton for about 10 years before switching over to trackers about 4ish years ago. Im sure its been said before but the reason i love programming breaks on trackers for jungle/drumfunk is that it forces me to listen to the programmed break more deeply. I guess they tried to hit that head on with the weird multiple edit thing they bought in but I don't like it. I have often used the PC's 'print screen' command and pasted the image into Paint so I have the ability to see other midi events while writing another part. I have always found this side of things tedious in Live, coming out of 1 clip, opening another just to see what's going on. If I could allow myself the time to actually learn the tracker approach I might well find it liberating but having said that, I'm not sure that it is that easy for melodic / harmonic stuff but at least you seem to be able to have some sort of holistic overview of what notes are happening and where. I dunno if this is true but I sense it's mostly Ableton Live users who continually evaluate the potential of other DAW's with a view to jumping ship. It's quick to work with loops and has some good bundled efx but I think the midi side of things is pretty terrible TBH, worst Piano roll I have ever used and a totally convoluted way of approaching music writing. I've read Ableton Live is the most unstable DAW out there but I dunno how true that is as I'd have had to try them all to know draw that conclusion but I get really annoyed with it almost every time I use it, I think it's over-hyped, has a hugely inflated price compared to others - which by the look of things and opinions, seem generally more stable, more CPU efficient and are better for actually writing music.
